Flower Color?
Some flowers are hard to categorize or have multiple colors but the predominant color is provided.
Light Requirements?
This is a general requirement for light including “Sun to Partial Shade” and “Partial Shade to Shade”.
Moisture Requirements?
Most native plants have a broad tolerance in landscape planting settings. For example, many species that grow in wetlands can grow well in ‘average’ soils.
Deer Resistance?
General observations are provided to include “High” (virtually browse-free), “Moderate” (sometimes eaten in various degrees), and “Low” (always eaten, absolutely need to protect from deer).
Edible Parts?
This can refer to something obvious like edible berries but can also refer to dried leaves used for teas.
Sunny Meadow Patch?
Plant is suitable to mix with other similar species to form a meadow. Sometimes these species are not ‘neat enough’ to be utilized in some gardeners’ formal garden beds.
Formal Flower Bed?
Plant is suitable to mix with other similar species in a formal / neat flower bed.
Ground Cover?
Plant can provide a uniform, neat ground cover ranging in height from 0.5’ to 3’ tall. These species tend to produce shoots or can be planted densely.
Foundation Planting?
Plants are suitable for growing in front garden beds due to their neat appearance and heights of less than 4’ tall.
Privacy Screening?
Plants are evergreen or have dense branching to provide privacy. Vines growing on a trellis are included here.
Specimen Plant?
Plants are suitable to grow as individuals away from garden beds or meadows. These species include trees and large shrubs.
